Jose Eduardo dos Santos is an Angola politician who served as President of Angola from 1979 to 2017. He was born on August 28, 1942, to Avelino Eduardo dos Santos and Jacinta Jos Paulino.
He attended primary school in Luanda and proceeded to Liceu Salvador Correia to have his second cycle education. While in school, he joined MPLA who boosted his interest in politics. He then moved to the Soviet Union where he received a degree in Petroleum engineering.
After the death of Angola’s first president, Agostinho Neto, Jose Eduardo was elected president of the MPLA and took office as President of Angola and commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces on September 21.
Dos Santos announced on March 11, 2016, that he planned to retire in 2018. This means he was not going to contest in the next elections. The MPLA then elected Joao Lourenco, the minster of Defense and Vice President of the MPLA as the party’s top candidate and presidential candidate for the 2017 elections.
