American actor Michael K Williams, best known for his role in HBO drama series, “The Wire,” was reported to have been found dead in his New York apartment.
Though the cause of death has not been officially confirmed yet, many media outlets have reported that the actor died from a “suspected drug overdose.”
The New York Police Department is said to have gone to Williams’ Brooklyn penthouse after receiving an emergency call on Monday afternoon, September 6th. he is said to have been found, dead by his nephew.
Reports say officials have said they found what appeared to be drug paraphernalia in the apartment. The city medical examiner’s office is said to be currently looking into his death and no official cause has been released yet.
Williams had openly discussed his struggles with drugs over the years.
Though he became one of the most memorable characters in TV history with his role in “The Wire”, it, however, was a tough role for him.
The actor, who received two NAACP Image Award nominations for the performance, said the character brought “dark energy” to him, which lead him to a fight with addiction. He said he was doing cocaine while playing Omar.
In 2012, he told NJ.com: “I was playing with fire… It was just a matter of time before I got caught and my business ended up on the cover of a tabloid or I went to jail or, worse, I ended up dead. When I look back on it now, I don’t know how I didn’t end up in a body bag.”
Williams eventually got clean but he would talk openly about his fight with addiction, while still acknowledging that it’s a daily fight.
“Addiction doesn’t go away… It’s an everyday struggle for me, but I’m fighting,” he told New York Times in 2017.
In “The Wire”, he played Omar Little, a streetwise robber of drug gangs. He was also known for playing Albert “Chalky” White in the Boardwalk Empire TV series.
Michael William was 54 years.
